The power of integration

Martin Kingman, founder and CEO of Pro Legal Group, outlines how the firm’s integrated model moves companies from reactive problem-solving to strategic forward planning in an increasingly complex business landscape

Legal, compliance, IT and training – Pro Legal Group brings these services together seamlessly under one roof. Headquartered in Sittingbourne, Kent, the multi-disciplinary group supports SMEs and large corporates across the South East and the UK, helping them manage risk, maintain liquidity, resolve disputes, strengthen governance and streamline operations.

So, where did it all begin? Martin Kingman founded Professional Legal Collections, now part of Pro Legal Group Limited, in 2014, following a varied career spanning law, consultancy and industry. “After many years working in large regional law firms and then in industry, I became aware of how disconnected those disciplines often were in practice,” he tells South East Business. “Legal advice was being given in isolation from commercial reality; compliance was treated as a burden rather than an asset.”

Before establishing Pro Legal Group, Martin already recognised the importance of aligning advice with commercial goals and objectives. However, his roles outside traditional law firms reinforced that the best solutions are rarely purely legal or technical – they start with strategy and flow from there.

In response, Martin set out to build a group that united legal expertise, compliance systems and operational insight, enabling clients to access joined-up advice that not only solved problems but prevented them. That vision became the foundation for what is now Pro Legal Group: a cradle-to-grave provider of professional business support services.

Martin’s understanding of how businesses truly operate, and the need to design systems that people can use day to day, became paramount. “It all starts with a strategic, overarching vision,” he explains. “These experiences have shaped how I lead. I expect my teams to think beyond their specialisms and ask, ‘How does this affect the business as a whole?’. It’s an approach that encourages collaboration, innovation and a focus on outcomes rather than paperwork and box-ticking.”

Pro Legal Group’s subsidiaries each have a defined focus: Professional Litigation Company, an SRA-authorised commercial law firm; Professional Legal Collections, specialising in debt recovery; Professional Legal Compliance, delivering ISO and regulatory frameworks; PLC IT Services, providing cybersecurity and managed IT; and PLC Training Academy, supporting workforce development.

Across all entities, the common thread is a commitment to practical, business-led solutions that integrate legal and operational thinking, ensuring clients remain compliant, efficient and competitive through clear, commercially focused advice and support.

Whether they’re SMEs or larger corporates, Pro Legal Group’s clients often face the same challenges in managing legal, compliance and operational risk. Most, Martin observes, struggle with integration – disparate systems, departments and advisers that don’t communicate effectively. “They tend to react to problems rather than prevent them because the warning signs get lost in the noise of daily operations,” he says. “Our role is to bring clarity and structure: aligning legal strategy with compliance frameworks and technology so issues are identified early and managed proactively. Ultimately, we help businesses move from firefighting to forward planning.”

A holistic approach underpins Pro Legal Group. Martin emphasises that modern business risks “don’t sit neatly in one box.” A cyber breach is simultaneously an IT failure and a regulatory incident; a compliance lapse can become a reputational issue overnight. By bringing these disciplines together, the group helps clients move beyond reactive responses and instead build resilience across their organisations.

The aim is to create smarter, more connected businesses that can adapt to whatever comes next instead of being blindsided by it. Pro Legal Group exists to be a trusted partner – not only during challenging moments but throughout periods of growth and stability as well.

Over the past decade, Pro Legal Group has achieved a series of significant milestones that Martin and his team are especially proud of. The business has grown from a single debt recovery firm into a fully integrated group with national reach, adding new divisions in compliance, IT and training. It has also developed proprietary software for legal workflow automation and built strong partnerships across both the professional and voluntary sectors.

Martin notes that, along the way, the group has earned a reputation for solving complex problems and delivering measurable results. “Perhaps most rewarding has been watching our people grow,” he explains. “For a few, it was their first time in the professional services sector, and they have helped shape what Pro Legal Group has become and stands for today.”

Recently, the team has been heavily focused on developing its legal workflow software, which Pro Legal Group will soon offer to other law firms. The business has also strengthened partnerships within the accounting and IT sectors and expanded its training academy to support more organisations in upskilling their teams.

With this front of mind, Pro Legal Group has continued to expand its multidisciplinary offering and invest heavily in digital infrastructure. According to Martin, the days of siloed professional advice are numbered; the firms that will thrive are the ones that combine legal precision with operational agility and real-world practicality.

Technology is playing a defining role in that transformation. Automation, AI and data analytics are reshaping the way legal and compliance services are delivered, driving speed, consistency and transparency. Pro Legal Group has embraced these developments, using technology to integrate workflows, streamline document management and create intelligent compliance systems.

Yet Martin stresses that digital tools are only part of the story. He recognises that technology is an amplifier, not a replacement for human expertise. “The key is to combine digital tools with sound commercial judgement and practical experience to deliver advice that’s not only accurate but commercially meaningful and financially astute.”

Beyond the operational shifts, the wider regulatory and economic environment continues to present both risks and opportunities for UK organisations. Martin believes that uncertainty and complacency are the biggest challenges businesses, particularly those in the South East, face. “Economic pressure, regulatory change and digital threats are creating a volatile landscape,” he explains. “Standing still just isn’t an option anymore.”

However, he remains optimistic about the potential for forward-thinking organisations. “Within that volatility lie opportunities, particularly for businesses willing to embrace compliance as a competitive advantage and use technology to scale efficiently. Those who invest in resilience and adaptability now will come out stronger on the other side.”

Away from the demands of leading a growing multidisciplinary group, Martin’s downtime looks rather different from the boardroom. He volunteers with Kent Search and Rescue as a Search Manager and Trustee – a role he describes as both grounding and purposeful. “Working alongside Kent Police to find high-risk vulnerable individuals, often under pressure and in challenging conditions, sharpens your decision-making and reminds you of the power of teamwork,” he explains. Having led the unit for the past two years, he speaks with great admiration for the volunteers he serves with: “I’m incredibly fortunate to lead such a fabulous team of professional volunteers.”

When time allows, Martin recharges by getting outdoors with his dog Sage or picking up an instrument – he plays drums and guitar, and is currently honing his piano skills. For someone who admits he likes to stay busy, making space to pause and reflect is essential. “I’ve learned that stepping back is often where the best ideas emerge,” he says.

Looking ahead, Pro Legal Group is positioning itself for the next stage of sustainable, innovation-led growth. The business is expanding its training and compliance platforms, strengthening its technology integrations and deepening cross-sector partnerships. With plans to introduce accounting and HR services, the group is set to broaden its offering even further.

Martin maintains that the most significant opportunities lie in the continued convergence of professional services. “The future is where law, compliance and technology work hand in hand,” he states. “Our goal is to lead that evolution – to help businesses not just survive change, but thrive through it.”
