Brachers advises WSL on sale to Octopus Legacy

Kent solicitors Brachers’ Corporate team has successfully advised the shareholders of WSL Ltd (WSL Will Writing) on its sale to Octopus Legacy, a fast-growing estate planning firm and part of Octopus Group.

WSL, established in 1992, has built a strong reputation for providing expert will writing and estate planning services, with a client base of over 300,000.

The acquisition brings together WSL’s 33 years of experience with Octopus Legacy’s tech-driven, customer-first approach, ensuring that WSL customers “continue to receive the same personal and compassionate service they have trusted for decades”.

As part of Octopus Group, one of the UK’s most prominent financial services and energy businesses, WSL clients will “benefit from the stability and innovation of a trusted national brand”.

The acquisition ensures that WSL’s legacy of excellence continues, with its customers gaining access to Octopus Legacy’s tech-driven estate planning solutions.

John and Geralyn Donohoe, WSL’s owners, said: “After more than three decades of building WSL into a trusted name in estate planning, it was essential for us to find the right partner to carry forward everything we’ve built, with the same dedication to our clients.

“Octopus Legacy shares our commitment to customer service and innovation, making this transition a natural fit. We are confident that WSL is in safe hands and look forward to seeing the business flourish under Octopus Legacy’s leadership.

“We’re also incredibly grateful to Claire, Kieron and the Brachers team for their expert handling throughout the process.”

Claire Williams, corporate partner at Brachers, led the team advising WSL’s shareholders, supported by Kieron Cummins and Charlotte Berthel. The transaction involved a multifaceted consideration structure, with the Brachers team working closely with the sellers throughout.

Claire said: “We are delighted to have advised WSL’s shareholders on this important transaction. WSL has built an outstanding reputation for its commitment to customer service and estate planning excellence.

“By joining Octopus Legacy, the business is well-positioned to continue delivering high-quality services with the added strength and innovation that Octopus Group offers.

“We are proud to have supported John and Geralyn in ensuring the business is placed in safe hands, and we look forward to seeing WSL thrive in its next chapter.”
