Dandara backs National Careers Week to highlight opportunities in housebuilding

To support National Careers Week 2025 (3-8 March), independent housebuilder Dandara is highlighting key individuals within its business who have exceptional experience in the housebuilding industry.

Dean Coomber, head of commercial for Dandaraโ€™s South East region, is a prime example of the opportunities and experience available to those looking to kickstart their career in property.

Dean began his career at Dandara in 2015 as a trainee quantity surveyor, working on a multi-phased 600-unit development Knights Wood in Royal Tunbridge Wells. From there, he progressed through the ranks to an assistant QS, then eventually becoming the lead surveyor on a development in Church View in Tenterden.

โ€œI studied Business Management, specialising Operations & Project Management at Bournemouth University, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Commercial Management and Surveying,โ€ says Dean.

โ€œIt was during my undergraduate degree that I realised the variation of opportunities within the housebuilding industry and that not all career paths go in one direction. I first learned about Dandara through a family friend who was advertising a role, and as they say, the rest is history!โ€

After two and a half years as a project surveyor, Dean was promoted to managing surveyor, overseeing a small team for the business. Three years ago, he stepped into his current position as head of commercial, where he leads a six-person team.

His role encompasses all commercial aspects including budgeting, financial reporting, cost control, risk management and contract negotiations to ensure project viability and profitability.

Dean adds: โ€œOne of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is witnessing the construction process from start to finish. Having grown up in a family with a strong background in construction, particularly within the trades, I have a deep appreciation for each stage of the construction process.

โ€œEnsuring that every team member feels valued in their contribution is critical, especially as the industry works to meet the governmentโ€™s ambitious housing targetsโ€.

โ€œOver the past 10 years, Dandara has undergone significant transformation, and I am proud to have been part of that journey. A key factor in our success is the people โ€“ many of my colleagues have been with the company for over 10 years, which speaks volumes about our strong culture and the positive working environment we have fostered.

โ€œIt is this commitment to excellence and collaboration that makes Dandara a great place to work.โ€

A new report released by the HBF last year showed that housebuilding in England and Wales generated ยฃ53.3billion of economic output and supported 834,000 jobs, and 10,000 apprentices, showcasing the social and economic benefits of the industry.

Speaking on his advice for anyone looking at beginning a career in the housebuilding industry, Dean concludes: โ€œThe industry is extremely fast-paced โ€“ no two projects are the same, and new challenges arise daily, making it the perfect fit for anyone looking to gain experience fast. Roles like quantity surveying, project management and other commercial positions offer exciting opportunities for young people.

โ€œIf I had known about the quantity surveying role earlier, I would have most likely pursued a surveying degree from the start or explored alternative pathways into the industry.

โ€œThere are some excellent apprenticeship schemes available at Dandara that provide hands-on experience whilst you study, offering young people a raft of options to get kick-started in their careers.โ€
