Dartford-based ARC-UK Technologies invests over £1 million in eco-friendly printing technology. We delve into the details of this ambitious project…
In a ground-breaking move towards sustainability, ARC-UK Technologies, a leading provider of digital print and document imaging, has recently announced an investment exceeding £1 million in eco-friendly printing technology.
Headquartered in Dartford and part of globally recognised New York-listed ARC Document Solutions, ARC-UK Technologies is a key player in the digital print and document imaging sector, offering a range of services to local businesses throughout Kent, as well as nationally. The company operates with a dedicated mission to drive positive social, environmental and economic impact. A core facet of this involves actively reducing carbon footprints and emissions, aligning with the targets set by local communities.
Acknowledging the environmental impact of the printing industry as a whole, ARC-UK Technologies has partnered with packaging carbon consultancy Carbon Quota to introduce innovative carbon-neutral printing protocols, emphasising renewable energy sources and eco-friendly materials. “The printing industry is a significant producer of carbon emissions, with its consequential use of energy consumption and waste production,” explains Darren Moorhouse, head of sales UK & Europe at ARC-UK Technologies. “The growing use of paper from unsustainable sources, petroleum-based inks and traditional printing technologies has resulted in a significantly negative impact on the environment. Through our investment in advanced printing technology processes, renewable energy initiatives and consumable programs, we are on a trajectory to substantially reduce the environmental footprint associated with print production processes.”

The decision to invest in eco-friendly printing technology stems from ARC-UK Technologies’ commitment to sustainability and its desire to meet increased demand without compromising environmental goals. Traditional printing processes are known for their high energy consumption and toxic waste generation, but the company’s investment in the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED press represents a paradigm shift in the industry, offering enhanced efficiency, flexibility and environmental sustainability. “Our modern, environmentally friendly print production facilities and resources offer greater precision and less material waste, whilst also ensuring greater accuracy of colour reproduction – a vital brand management prerequisite,” says Darren.
The Fujifilm Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED press stands out with its wide-format capabilities, combining exceptional quality with greater flexibility. With impressive print speeds and resolutions, this technology allows ARC-UK Technologies to provide added value to customers while significantly reducing delivery times. The press’s ability to use recyclable inks and accommodate various media types aligns seamlessly with the company’s broader sustainability goals, contributing to reduced environmental impact.
The second to be installed in the UK, the press can eco-friendly print all the signage for a 1.6 million sq ft shopping centre, such as Bluewater in Kent, in just 48 hours. It also accepts rigid and flexible media such as Forex, PVC, aluminium composite sheets, fabrics, banners and adhesive applications, enabling ARC-UK Technologies to further expand its range of substrate print options.
ARC-UK Technologies dispels the misconception that sustainability measures are synonymous with increased costs. On the contrary, the company highlights the financial benefits experienced since implementing sustainable practices. Sustainable printing, the team say, is not just a trend; it’s a necessity. “As the world becomes more aware of the need to preserve the environment, businesses that embrace sustainability will remain relevant,” states Darren. “In the printing industry, this involves a shift in mindset and a change in business practices. It requires businesses to invest in sustainable practices and technologies and to educate their stakeholders on the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices.”
ARC-UK Technologies’ collaboration with Landsec – one of the UK’s largest property and investment companies – for example, exemplifies the organisation’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The partnership, formed in 2023, resulted from ARC-UK Technologies achieving carbon-neutral production status. A range of print and display services, including vinyl displays, are provided across Landsec’s retail destinations in Leeds, Dartford, London, Somerset, Hertfordshire, Portsmouth, Oxford, Cardiff, Essex and West Yorkshire, supporting local communities’ net carbon zero ambitions. Darren points out: “We are continuing to explore ways in which ARC-UK Technologies’ printing capabilities, skills and knowledge can help support Landsec’s’ industry-leading sustainability strategy with print and document solutions.”
This year, ARC-UK Technologies will undergo a sizeable renewable energy conversion transformation, with over £150,000 allocated to install solar panels on the roof space of its 2,800 sqm eco-friendly ‘Production Centre of Excellence’ facility in Dartford. The panels supply and installation has been sourced from a local company, AES Solar, which is situated next door. Upon completion of the solar panel installation project, the Dartford facility will immediately transition from carbon neutral to carbon zero status.
Working collaboratively with Dartford Council and partners, ARC-UK Technologies hopes to enhance the area surrounding its carbon-neutral Dartford headquarters for the benefit of everyone who lives there. This long-term project is intended to improve the quality of life by providing better employment, sustainable facilities, EV transport and green spaces for people and wildlife.
As other businesses contemplate their own sustainability efforts, Darren offers the following advice: “Embarking on the path to carbon neutrality may seem daunting, initially. However, the investment of time and financial commitment you make now will yield benefits for your business and the environment, both in the present and future. I firmly believe that businesses hold an obligation to do everything within their capacity to safeguard the local environment and secure long-term sustainability for our planet. To fulfil that obligation, we strongly recommend forging partnerships with reputable carbon management organisations to steer you through the complex pathway towards achieving your environmental goals.”
ARC-UK Technologies not only prints with purpose but also pioneers a blueprint for sustainable practices in the printing industry. The company’s journey serves as an inspiration for businesses seeking to balance growth with environmental stewardship, proving that adopting responsible business practices isn’t just about safeguarding the planet – it’s a strategic move that fortifies long-term success.

ARC-UK Technologies’ sustainable milestones
- Since 2022, ARC-UK Technologies has become one of the first printing companies to offer carbon-neutral production, setting a precedent for the industry, and was recognised and certified by packaging carbon consultancy Carbon Quota.
- In 2022, ARC-UK Technologies moved to a newly-built multi-million-pound eco-friendly sustainable site in Dartford. The company became the first print business in Kent to work towards being carbon-neutral with the newly built 30,000 sq ft facility, helping to kickstart Kent County Council’s plans to be carbon-neutral by 2050. The Mayor of Dartford attended the official opening.
