Kent housebuilder encourages more young people into construction

Ahead of National Careers Week (4-9 March), Kent housebuilder Redrow is encouraging more young people to consider a career in construction.

As part of a partnership with the Amber Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting young adults aged 18-30 facing complex problems, including homelessness and unemployment, Redrow South East welcomed a group of young adults to its Crown Hill View development in Ashford for a unique behind-the-scenes tour of the development.

As well as visiting the site office and active building site, the potential construction recruits had the opportunity to speak with the site team about the different careers in the industry, the variety of routes into the sector and their path to working at Redrow.

The site visit has already begun to have a positive impact on those who attended. Some are actively job searching and looking at courses within the construction industry specifically, rewriting their CVs or thinking about some of the short CPD courses they can engage with to upskill, further their interests and give themselves a competitive edge over other candidates.

The young people were also able to speak with Jules Drury, construction administrator at Redrow South East, who supports the division’s apprentices and has interviewed many new recruits for all kinds of construction roles over the years. Jules was able to share her expert tips on navigating an interview.

Ben Fewsdale, managing director at Redrow South East, said: “We are always keen to build partnerships with local charities, groups and schools to demonstrate the wealth of different roles in the construction sector and here at Redrow.

“We were really pleased to welcome young adults from Amber Foundation ahead of National Careers Week. Amber was a joy to host at Crown Hill View. It was great to see everyone so engaged in the tour and keen to find out more about working in the sector. We’re looking forward to working with the charity again in the future.”

Pippa Weatherstone, service manager at Amber Foundation, added: “We were delighted to visit Redrow’s Crown Hill View development. With the site so close to our centre in Ashford, it is a great opportunity for our young people to see how a construction site is managed and talk about potential careers in the industry. We are grateful for the invite and look forward to more collaboration in the future.”
