Canterbury restaurant The Corner House seeks new owner

Leisure property specialist Fleurets has brought to market the freehold interest in The Corner House, a successful and long-established restaurant business in Canterbury, Kent.

The independently owned The Corner House is being offered following 10 highly successful years under the ownership of restaurateur and chef Matt Sworder.

Sworder acquired the former Flying Horse pub through Fleurets in 2015 and has since transformed the building into an award-winning restaurant with rooms, earning a well-deserved reputation for “simple food, done well”.

The property comprises a Grade II listed period building dating back to the late 16th century, with herringbone wood floors, beamed ceilings and brick fireplaces.

The premises are finished to an exceptional standard throughout and provide 58 covers internally, plus a trade garden with capacity for 40. There are five well-appointed character en-suite letting bedrooms, accessed via a separate ground-floor entrance.

The property is being offered at the guide price of £995,000 for the freehold.

While on the market, The Corner House will continue to operate as usual, honouring existing bookings and welcoming new guests.

Matt Sworder, founder and chef patron of The Corner House, added: “The Corner House has been a significant part of my life since I first opened in Minster, aged 27. 14 years on and I’m still 100% committed to the team and to our guests.

“I’m proud to have been running such a successful restaurant for so long. With the sale, I want to build on the restaurant’s legacy and hand over to the next guardian of this very special part of my career.

“I’m extremely proud of the team, several of whom have been with me for more than a decade. It is the team who make the restaurant as good as it is, and they have all been informed of our plans and reassured that their jobs are safe.”

Simon Bland, senior associate at Fleurets, said: “I’m really delighted to be entrusted with this sale for a very valued client who acquired the property through me 10 years ago.

“It has been quite a journey and transformation of a lovely old building into a terrific business. This is a rare and special opportunity to acquire a long-established, successful and very well looked after enterprise. We anticipate attracting strong interest.”
